Pulmonary Function Testing

Integrated Community Health Services Centre

Referrals & Requisitions

Referrals for diagnostic testing are accepted from family physicians, specialists, nurse practitioners, and other regulated healthcare providers. Testing is available to patients in the community and is not restricted to a single clinic or practice group.

Referrals may be submitted using a standard referral letter or preferably using our standard requisition form.   We accept eReferrals from the Ocean platform.   Completed requisitions should include relevant clinical information to support appropriate test selection and interpretation.

Our lab requisition is available for download for Accuro EMR users.  [ Forms > Tools > Publish/Download > Search "PFT Mississauga" or "One Breath" ]

Referrals for RESPIROLOGY CONSULTATION are NOT processed by the lab.  If a respirology consult is required, please send referral directly to specialist office/clinic.

Report Distribution

Pulmonary function test reports are reviewed by a Respirologist and distributed to the referring healthcare provider identified on the requisition.

Where available, reports will be delivered electronically through Ontario Health Record Manager (HRM) to the referring provider’s electronic medical record.

Reports are not routinely sent directly to patients unless specifically requested by the referring provider or required for care coordination. Patients who wish to review their results are encouraged to discuss them with their referring clinician, who can interpret the findings in the appropriate clinical context.

If additional distribution is required (for example, to another involved provider), this should be indicated at the time of referral.

Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO)

Exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) testing is not currently covered by OHIP and is considered a non-insured service.  For 2025, the price is $65.00.

For more information regarding the role of FeNO in primary and secondary care, see our blog post here.
