One Breath: Pulmonary Diagnostics
Your Guide to PFTs
Pulmonary Function Tests
A pulmonary function test (PFT) is a safe, non-invasive assessment used to measure how well your lungs are working. Before testing begins, a qualified respiratory technologist will explain the purpose of the test and what is involved, and you will have an opportunity to ask questions. During the test, you will be guided through a series of breathing manoeuvres using specialized equipment, such as breathing in deeply, breathing out steadily, or blowing forcefully into a mouthpiece. In some cases, the test may be repeated after you use an inhaled medication to assess how your lungs respond. The testing is supervised at all times, typically takes 30–60 minutes, and is generally well tolerated. You may pause or stop the test at any point if you feel unwell. You can return to your usual activities immediately after the appointment.
Test Preparation
To help ensure accurate and reliable results, please review the following preparation guidance, based on recommendations from the American Thoracic Society and the European Respiratory Society:
-
Medications: Some inhalers may need to be temporarily held before testing, depending on the reason for your test. If this applies to you, you will be given specific instructions in advance. Do not stop any medications unless you are advised to do so.
-
Smoking and vaping: Please avoid smoking or vaping on the day of your test.
-
Food and caffeine: Avoid large meals for at least 2 hours before your appointment and limit caffeine intake beforehand.
-
Exercise: Please avoid vigorous physical activity for at least 4 hours prior to testing.
-
Clothing: Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to breathe deeply.
-
Recent illness or health changes: If you have had a recent respiratory infection, surgery, or a significant change in your health, please let us know before your appointment, as testing may need to be rescheduled.
If you have any questions about how to prepare, or are unsure whether these instructions apply to you, please contact our office. Our team will review everything with you on the day of testing and ensure you are comfortable throughout the visit.
Fees for Non-Insured Services
Most pulmonary function tests offered at our clinic are covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). Exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) testing is not currently covered by OHIP and is considered a non-insured service. If FeNO testing is recommended, patients will be informed in advance and provided with information about any applicable fees before proceeding.

Results & Follow-Up
Test results are interpreted by a physician and sent to the referring healthcare provider. Results are typically available within a few days, though timing may vary depending on the type of testing performed. If you have questions about your results, please discuss them with your referring provider, who will place them in the context of your overall care.

For Children & Families
Pulmonary function testing can often be performed in children, depending on age and ability to follow instructions. Our staff take a supportive, age-appropriate approach and will explain each step in a way that is easy to understand. Parents or caregivers are welcome to be present during testing. Consent will be obtained from a parent or legal guardian, as appropriate.

Accessibility & Accommodations
Our clinic is wheelchair accessible. If you require specific accommodations, have mobility limitations, or need additional support during your visit, please let us know in advance so we can plan accordingly.
